With the changing of the calendar year from 2007 to 2008 it is time to focus on the great upcoming games of the new year. While there were so many great first person shooters in 2007, 2008 proves to be a year of awesome FPS as well. Let’s take a look at what fans of the genre have to look forward to during the next twelve months.
Battlefield: Bad Company In this first person shooter you play as the leader of a band of misfit soldiers who decide to go rogue and steal a truck full of gold that has been driving through the territory you are guarding. This game has everything you could want in a first person shooter, plus the ability to blow anything and everything up. There are many objectives in each level with which you complete by picking up specialized “class kits”. For example, if your demolition kit is not able to hit people from far away, you can switch to you sniper kit and pop their heads off one by one. One of the coolest kits, as seen in the picture above is the radio controlled missile. It even comes with a camera attached to it so that you can see where to guide your missile to. Frontlines: Fuel of War In this game, the world’s fuel supply is down to a trickle, and there is a world war going on to determine who get’s to use it. It’s a battle between the superpowers and it’s up to you to decide who wins. The game, created by THQ and Kaos Studios is not as linear as most first person shooters. You will have many objectives on your map at one time, and you can pick the route and method for completing each one. The online multiplayer will be able to support 32 players and will have an RPG like feel when it comes to advancing your character in a match. There are also tons of vehicles you can ride in such as tanks, helicopters, and trucks, as well as tons of weapons to pick up alone the way Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 Set for a March of 2008 release, TCRSV2 is guaranteed to be one of the best first person shooters of the year. Riding on the shirttails of it’s predecessor, TCRSV2 will have the same style of tactical combat but with a more intense campaign and more multiplayer options.
Project Offset Project Offset is a class based, fantasy world, first person shooter that will have you thinking that you are actually in the game. The technology that is used in the game is a breakthrough in real time graphics, making it look like real life, instead of CGI. The game has a single player campaign that is experienced through the perspectives of many heroes, with many different storylines, ridable beasts, and a hybrid combat system similar to that of halo, with projectile and melee combat. On top of that you have multiplayer deathmatch, team deathmatch, objective based missions, and capture the flag Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Although it is already out for the PC, it was worth the wait to get it on the 360. The game, which is set in the Quake universe, features a very heavy multiplayer style of play. You can choose between being Strogg or the human Earth Defense Force and you will get to build up your character every time you play. The goal of Quake Wars is to gain a tactical advantage by moving the frontlines. You can achieve this by conquering and holding bases or blowing up enemy barriers. You will also be able to offer support to your fellow troops and drive a dozen different vehicles around the battle field. Other first person shooters to keep an eye out for: Conflict: Denied Ops
